Chaotic and abstract, focused and concrete are the opposites that blend together to create a unique and exclusive audiovisual experience. This interactive collaboration of image and sound generates a compelling fusion of light and rhythm. Jakean’s performance of live music, ranging from hard techno rolling bass to moving and uplifting indie electronic, is blended with distorted and altered visuals created in real time by Annie Socoria. Dynamic textures, colour, form and sound build an immersive event, where music informs an ever-changing backdrop of images.

Jakean is an Oji-Cree First Nations musician, live performer, and producer from Sioux Lookout, now based in Ottawa. The name “Jakean” memorializes an elder of his community, and is a symbol of his ties to indigenous culture and family history. With combinations of indie electronic and techno, Jakean’s passion is sharing their music through carefully-crafted live experiences. Armed with a keyboard, bass guitar and a variety of controllers, they play special variations of original music that can only be heard at live events. The Jakean live show consists of excited synths and arpeggiators, aggressive and distorted bass guitar with pumping and hard-hitting drums. In contrast, the show blends in moments that are emotionally-driven and lyric-focused while remaining danceable and upbeat.

Annie Socoria is an Ottawa-based experimental audiovisual artist. They create atmospheric ambient soundscapes and dynamic abstract video using a variety of methods (modified and hand-built electronics, hardware and software synthesizers, “no-input” mixing, audio and video feedback, analog video glitch, cassette tape loops, field recordings and more). Sound and light are crafted using a multidisciplinary approach with a focus on exploration and the discovery of unconventional techniques.
